Athens, Greece

Welcome to Athens

So you are thinking about travelling to Greece for top surgery? You have come to the right place. This page is dedicated to providing more information about Dr Ntanos’ Athens practice so you can feel better informed in your decision making around your gender affirming top surgery.

Dr Ntanos set up his practice abroad after many years of working in Manchester so that those who feel able to travel can benefit from the reduced rates which are available outside of the UK.

Those travelling to Athens will have access to the same high quality service, but with the added benefits of sunshine, amazing scenery and great food thrown in.

Dr Ntanos has set up his practice in the prestigious Hygeia/Mitera Hospital, the leading hospital in Athens, and operates there regularly throughout the month. As this is a new practice for Dr Ntanos, he has plenty of availability. If you would like to find out more email: topsurgery@IoannisNtanos.com

A step by step overview of accessing top surgery with Ioannis Ntanos in Athens

Step 1. Gather and upload your documentation

Important: We require patients to provide the following information upon booking:

    - registration proforma

    - one or more pictures of their chest

    - supporting referral letter, where there is a history of mental health issues

Please note, failure to provide the necessary information will result in the appointment being delayed.

To book a consultation, submit the above information via email to: topsurgery@ioannisntanos.com

Step 2. Consultation

Once documentation has been received and reviewed, a consultation is arranged virtually or, in exceptional circumstances, in person.

Step 3. Arrange the surgery

A mutually convenient date for surgery is selected and any requirements for a pre-operative assessment are discussed and agreed.

Step 4. Travelling to Athens

Book your flights and accommodation. Plan to arrive at least 24 hours before your surgery takes place. Arrive at Hygeia/Mitera Hospital for your pre-operative assessment on the pre agreed date (one day before the operation). Please note that Dr Ntanos is happy to accept recent investigation reports from the UK such as FBC & ECG, leaving only a rapid test for the day of the admission. In the absence of any notable health issues, the preoperative tests will include an FBC and an ECG.

All being well, you can then return to your accommodation and enjoy within moderation the vibrant city of Athens.

Step 5. On the day of surgery

Make your way to the hospital. The first available slot in theatre is at 7:30am. Admission time is 7am unless otherwise instructed. Surgery takes approximately two hours after which you will spend up to four hours in a recovery suite (or a double room on a high floor if the procedure is performed during the weekend).

Step 6. Discharge

In order to be discharged you will need to be eating and drinking freely, passing urine with ease and walking around unassisted. It's very rare for patients to require an overnight stay.

Step 7. Dressing removal

Whether you have your surgery in Athens or London we offer a range of options for dressing removal.

  • Dr Ntanos will remove dressings free of charge in person (subject to his availability).

  • Dr Ntanos will guide the patient via video call, so that they can remove the dressings themselves at home at a mutually convenient time (no charge).

  • Dr Ntanos can connect the patient to a London-based nurse (at a cost of £75).

We look forward to welcoming you to Athens.
